and what about the JVM and vintage modern? I've been told slash plays the vintage modern and loves it, and guitarist said JVM was one of the best marshalls yet!

Slash & Hendrix are not really high gain. That's older Marshall tone. Same with Angus Young, Jimmy Page, etc.

I like a Marshal, particularly in a band mix, but they can be tempermental.

I would buy a Mesa or an Orange .... I kind of like HyWatt too. I don't play much heavy rock but I have been impressed with these amps.
I tried an Egnator and a Line 6 Spider at GC yesterday based on some of the stuff I read on this forum. I didn't care for either one of them. They are priced way too high.
Normally I would pass on Peavey but a Triple X might just fill the bill too.
