I'm kinda assuming this is one of the preamp tubes but when it is on the clean channel you can hear in the speakers what sounds like broken glass being rubbed together. It is very slight but noticeable. Would I be correct? I have no spare tubes to check it with right now. Smiley

You may be on the right track. Microphonic tubes sounds like that.

Well also due to it's age I'm going to recap it. If it still does it then I'll start swapping those out. After 15 years I'm sure the electrolytic caps could use a changing. I'm making a list now for Digikey.

I don't know what type of electrolytic are in that amp. If they aren't paper I wouldn't worry about recapping it unless there is a clear defect. I have amps that are 30+ years old and the caps are fine.

Swapped the power tubes and now it is back to normal. I wanted to ask also if anyone else here has a Classic 50. My normal channel sounds great. Rich and full in the tone. However when I use the lead channel there seems to be a serious lack of bottom end to it. Now it still has the original Peavey labeled preamp tubes in it. Over at the Peavey forum it was suggested to use a tungsol, sovtek, and JJ in certain positions to improves this. I'm certainly willing to give that a shot but was wondering if anyone else had that with theirs? I'm also considering doing circuit mods to improved it.

Just saw this thread. I was going to say there's a high likelihood of it being a power tube. That can also be caused or exacerbated by vibration in the cabinet. Glad you didn't try recapping anything or throwing any more money at itSmiley

Before going into mods you should try replacing the preamp tubes first. There you can have a combination of the tubes to give you certain tones such as high gain for one.

Do a research on Google as they have tone sets and you can read about it. It involves different types of tubes.

It's just a head not a combo so there was no real vibration issue there. As for recapping it would have been a last resort although after 10 years electrolytic caps tend to weaken and it's really not such a bad idea in some cases. Parts were gonna be around $35 and of course the labor would be me.

If I where you I'd re-tube the rest of the amp, you've already done the most expensive part with the power tubes. A set of JJ's will serve you well!
