Well i want to get a band started with a friend. We want r band to have a tone like korn(none of there new stuff lol...old stuff) and riffs like disturbed. I tuned my guitar to drop A and it sounds like crap. It sounds awsome if i play my stuff on one string.......but when i hit power chords it sounds like crap. And when i hit chords like lets say down with the sickness.

Those r the tabs for it.

It sounds bad. I used a digital tuner to tune it to ADGCFA and it sounds horrible when i hit chords. Can anyone axplain this to me or give me an alternate tuning to get this sound but be able to hit chords?
Any help would be appreciated. =)

Because of tuning and intonation issues, when you tune that low you start to get mud.. or sludge, this is why I don't tune lower then D things just start to sound really sloppy..you can address this with thicker gauge strings (11's) but you will need to adjust intonation, truss rod and bridge (neck for bowing as well)

your probably going out of tune very very quickly as well. As racerxxx said , itchanges the guitar setting all together. Plus your open tunning might be correct but not at the 12th cause you need it set up again. tension of strings would now be too lose, don't now how you could play to A without changing anything. i tryed C once cause albert king the blues guy tune to that i think. but strings were all floppy...

so because your tuning is wrong away from the open strings, you get some awful sounding chords

Just remember: guitars are set up to be tuned to standard, anything else (especially as drastic as you're talking about) needs major adjustment to sound normal.

Hi and welcome to gnet.

Strange that you didn't post anything about the gear you're using. The guitar, string gage, amp, etc. have a lot to do with diagnosing the problem.

A baritone guitar would be better suited to Drop A than a normal scale. Maybe you should consider one of the Agile 27"ers.

When you tune down, the strings are slacker. Thus when you fret a note, its easier to send the guitar out of tune.

By simply putting your fingers on the strings, you are sending them every soo slightly out of tune, and since each string is a different thickness, each string goes out of tune by a different amount, meaning you get a horrible mess.

Thats why Korn play 7 strings............. the extra bottom string means you don't need to tune as low, so it sounds better. Plus having 7 strings opens up more possibilities for muscial fun.

There's bands that play A standard on 6 strings, the number of strings does not dictate the tuning.

You're going to want to try 12-56's for tuning down to A. I have 10-52's on my les paul in C standard, and prefer 11-54's for C standard. I can do drop A with 11-54's and have it handle just fine. I was actually having fun in drop Bb yesterday

also, playing barred power chords only works if you are in a drop d style tuning. Right now you are playing in A standard so to speak.
