Why is a guitar called an ax?

And does it refer to any guitar, or just electric?

The only thing I can think of is because you can take it by the neck and swing it like you're chopping wood. Smiley

One of my favorite names on this forums is Axe Murderer. It's got a double edged meaning if you catch my drift Smiley

Its slang from the original jazz musicians. All instruments were called their ax. Someone with skills on his ax was said to have "chops". Thus you go to the woodshed to use your ax to develope your chops.

Gene Simmons, bass player of the Good Old Rock Band KISS, often played a bass shaped like a large double-headed battle axe with strings attached. The slang term 'axe' predates Simmons' axe bass, so it is likely that the slang term was what inspired him to have this instrument built.
