I will never run a four minute mile. In fact, these days, I couldn't even run for a bus! I am wondering if, for the same reason - caused by one's physical aging and the consequent limitations - it is not really possible to still play the faster pieces even with time and hard work. Am I being defeatist or should I be still striving to play any piece that requires speed and stamina, and play them as well as a twenty year old. I would prefer to avoid the hyperbolic answers that are usually used by a certain direct selling organisation who try to convince their cult members that "you can do absolutely anything you want to if you just try". :x One must set realistic, attainable goals.

I've seen a feeble old man sit down to a piano and play Chopin effortlessly. Now, he didn't start playing piano when he was old, but he definitely retained it. I would guess that if you practice diligently you can play any piece you desire. It might take a little bit longer than someone younger, but you can still build up muscles and strength.
The key is really to start slow and be consistent. Practice everyday and be patient. I've been playing guitar for 14 years I still cannot play every piece I wish I could. However, one day I'm gonna get there.
Worst comes to worst you will learn some simpler pieces and have fun with them. If there was anything I learned taking classical guitar lessons it was that its not all about the flashy pieces, but its about having fun and being musical. My teacher tended to not play the flashes pieces, but he is one of the better players I have known. Hope this helps.
