Crafter beginner guitar

My 14-year-old daughter will be starting acoustic guitar lessons shortly. The shop where she'll have lessons recommends a Crafter, grand concert style. They have a model TO35/N for $250, and one model down (I don't have the #) for $199. Both have solid tops; the $199 model comes in a choice of spruce or cedar.

First, can anyone comment on the Crafter brand? It doesn't seem to be available anywhere online so it's hard to compare prices or find reviews. This is just a beginner guitar but I like to know I'm getting a decent instrument for the money. How does it compare with similarly priced Fender, Martin, Alvarez?

Second, what are the pros and cons of spruce vs. cedar top?

Thanks very much!
-Josh

I can't answer for myself about Crafter, but have read good things about them on this forum. As for the difference between spruce and cedar, see the above sticky post by Magnus on buying a high quality guitar. He addresses the differences in tonewoods nicely in his very informative post.

A long-time member of this website bought (or rather his wife bought for him) a Crafter T035. IMO, it seems to be an increadible value for what you pay for them. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to play one, but from what our member has said about it, it's a great guitar.

They are obviously not the tops, but very good value for the money. Ideal for the beginner.

Thanks for all your posts - that's very helpful. Do you have any opinions about the grand concert body style vs. dreadnought? My daughter is 5'4".

I believe a grand concert model is like a jumbo, but I could be wrong. The drednaught is a bluegrass shaped guitar.Maybe the grand concert is bigger but thinner, that could be it.Anyway, either one should do the trick.

I've been told, although I 've never really noticed, that concert-style bodied guitars can be easier to hold and play. The real difference in body shapes is the sound and tone of the guitar. A dread produces a different sound than a jumbo, which produces a different sound from a concert, etc. For a beginner, though, I don't really think it's so important.

It sounds as though you have found an ethical dealer, worthy of your support.
The obvious solution is to have her play all the sizes. Jumbo and Dreadnoughts are the largest. Then .000/folk/parlor/grand acoustic. Given her smaller stature, this is may well be a good option for her and and also highlights the dealer's integrity in suggesting it.
Jumbo's are outsized and not everyone likes the feel of a dread. If she finds any size acceptable then it would be down to the sound she likes best, all three, having their strengths and weaknesses.

Not to put too fine a point on it . . . But a concert style instrument (think classical guitar shape) tends to produce a more neutral, or even tone across the strings. Dreadnoughts tend to be more bass-heavy.

For a beginner, I might tend toward a concert model. For that matter, I'd opt for a classical guitar. Nylon strings are just so much eaier to play. Something to think about when dealing with a new player; remove the pain and frustration of pushing steel strings around for the first time, and you may end up with a player who's more likely to stick with it.

That"s a lot for a crafter! Either of the 3 are good. Just choose the lesser just for beginners.
