Just looking for opinions on what might be a good first acoustic guitar for this price range. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Without know playing style and any other details, i is tough. Are you looking at the used market or do you insist on new? When you say $300, are you budgeting for a case, too? Is a setup in the budget? Have you played anything first hand in any price range that you like or dislike?

If I had $300 to spend on an acoustic guitar, I would look at the new Art & Lutherie entry level guitars, Yamaha FG guitars, Seagul S6, and used Breedloves and MArtin x series gutiar.

I'm not sure how comonly available they are, but Norman guitars are solid quality (owned by Godin, Art & Lutherie's parent company). I got mine a year and a half ago for $400 CAD with a gig bag, so they might be a wee bit over budget. I'd say it's more than worth the extra dough; solid top and build quality that would warrant a $500 sticker if someone else's name was on the headstock.

You're gonna want to test-drive every instrument in the store that you deem affordable.

I'll second this suggestion. A&L has changed their product offering a bit, but a few years ago I helped my sister pick out an acoustic guitar (she was only looking to spend @ $200). We found an A&L Wild Cherry model (the most current similar offering seems to be the Almond model) in the antique burst finish. An awesome guitar for the price. IMHO the best I've ever tried at less than $300.

And here's what it sounds like unplugged:

I agree, Norman, and Art & Lutherie (and Simon & Patrick, they're a bit pricier) are great bang for your buck. Alvarez are as well, but your into $400 + for a solid top (and I'd say at least go for a solid top).

I like a couple of the Seagulls. Any idea where the X series Martins are made. If they are just run of the mill Chinese stuff with a Martin name tag, I think I'll save a couple of hundred bucks and go with a Canadian made Seagull or a Chinese Epiphone. I have no problem with Asian made guitars, I just don't want pay a bunch extra for a name plate. Thanks for the input.

By the way, I want the guitar for strumming chords on Folk and folk rock type stuff. Big warm bassy type sound.

The Martin X series are currently made in Mexico. They first made them in Nazereth, PA, so you may find one of those in the used market.

I think I'll go with the Seagull.Features, reviews, and the fact that they are made in Canada all kind of make me lean that way. They have several models under 400 bucks and Music 123 is offering 15% off of that. I'm leaning toward the S6 Entourage only because it is the least expensive Seagull and I can't find any difference in it and the models that are 80 bucks higher in price. If I'm missing something in the different model specs please let me know. Thanks again for all the help. David

I ordered the S6 slim neck Seagull. I'll post some pics when it arrives.
