Hello, I am new here and to most things about guitars. I have a wiring question and hope you can help. I can't find a diagram and i don't really wanna screw it up. Can i have a 6-way switch wired up to a H/S/H

1 - Neck
2 - Neck, Middle
3 - Middle
4 - Middle, Hum
5 - Hum
6 - All

and have a switch to turn off the middle so it is just the Hums. The Hums with have Seymour Duncan Triple Shots around them. Also what kind of volume, tone controls would you recommend? Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As long as you are going to have two switches in the end anyway, here's a way to do it with three-way switches, which are much more common than six-way and a lot cheaper. Wire one switch up to the humbuckers like usual on a two-pickup guitar (neck/both/bridge), and wire the other one wired up middle/middle and buckers/buckers (i.e., the output of the buckers switch would go into one side of the switch with the middle on the other side). Between those two switches you could get every possible combination of those three pickups, including all of them at once.

Regarding tone and volume controls, the traditional values are 250K with single coil pickups and 500K with humbuckers. If you have both kinds of pickups, you can go either way: 500K pots will be a little brighter and 250K pots will be a little warmer. For a tone capacitor, the traditional values are .022 uf with humbuckers and .047 uf with single coils, but the higher the value, the more high end gets rolled off (i.e., how far down in the frequency band the tone pot affects. Capacitors are not expensive---at least, you can get cheap ones, although you can also spend an obscene amount if you start getting into audiophile or gear junkie esoterica. Anyway, I'd say, get a few in different values from Radio Shack or whatever and try them, and see which value you prefer.

Thanks for the reply. I may have to do that. This is the combo I was looking at.

Switch

Bridge

Neck

Middle

Might use a different middle. If you have any advise on that let me know as well. I am open for suggestions.

also, is there anyone out there who would have a wiring diagram for this set up? I could probably figure it out but this would be very helpful

A six-way switch might be okay if you have six options you want, but you want seven options, so you will need another switch anyway, so why make one of the switches an expensive and not-too-easy-to-use six-position rotary? Rotary switches can look cool with the chickenhead knobs but they're not really that easy to use. (I have a bass that uses one for pickup selection.)

One comment about your pickup selections is, that middle pickup might be substantially lower output than those humbuckers. I don't know that for sure, but it's something you may want to look into. Ask a lot of questions---maybe query Seymour Duncan directly. You probably won't have a chance to hear that combination of pickups in a guitar before you buy the pickups. You want to be sure they will blend well.

I was planning on contacting them and asking. The two HBs come as a matched set. But I am really unsure about the middle. Do you have a quick drawing of what you are describing. I am not sure i get it completly. I think i do but am not sure. Thanks for the help btw.
