I want an amp that suits heavy metal guitars, under $1000 if possible, because this will just be a starter amp, and my objective is to get it as soon as possible and also be somewhat economical about it 'cause I'm trying to start a band this summer. I don't care so much about clean tones. I want it to work well live but it doesn't need to be ceiling-rattling loud. I did some research and the one at this link seems to suit my needs. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/peavey-6505-112-60w-1x12-tube-combo-guitar-amp?condition=used Thoughts/ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance

Use? Home? Gig? One trick pony? Versatile?
Not enough information.

That's one of many possible choices that will do the trick.

I'm not really a metal man at all .... but I kind of like the Orange Amps like the Tiny Terror and such. They are a little pricey but I think if you find the Orange that has that sound you will be happier. Even though I own a lot of Peavey amps I think you can do better.
A guy at my church used to play with Ozzy Ozborne and Cinderella he uses Marshal solid state amps. I'm not much on Marshals either but the Solid State Marshals seem to be a good bang for the buck and has that sound.

....that's real nice kid. Now can you play that in Db for me?

That peavey you linked to will do the job just fine, without taking the house down. Try to find one used to save a coupe of dollars, if you so choose. The 5150/6505 heads have been a staple on metal albums for a couple of decades now.

Line 6 Spider Valve Mk II will get you there as well and has a good clean. You always want a good clean. You say you don't care about cleans. You will care about cleans. I haven't had a Peavey amp I've liked and that includes the 6505+ head I sold. Peavey tones grate on my nerves after a while.
Spider Valve II $899 new for a 40W 212 combo. It's not the solid state one. It's the Bogner power amp one.

I would still get the peavey, Julia. The tone is a staple, even though it's not the head version.

DC and Julia are both right. Check these amps out in a store, and see what you like better. You could also try a Peavey JSX, or a Randall of some kind. I'd stay away from Marshall.

They also don't get mentioned when talking about great metal albums though . I have the feeling that's not actually what Lacuna Coil take on tour as well.
Zug, a DSL halfstack with a boost will get you some good metal tones. I borrowed my friend's halfstack for a bit a couple of years ago and I was impressed.

It is DC. I've seen them on stage. Basically the name bands will use what companies pay them to use. About the only guitarist I know who gets away with not using the brands that endorse him is George Lynch.

I think I've seen at least one 5150 at any metal show I've been to, ever. So I still wouldn't get the Line 6.
Theo, that was well played
