I'm looking at a Hartke GT100 Guitar Amplifier Head (http://cachepe.samedaymusic.com/media/quality,85/brand,sameday/GT100-602ce9aa256a0deea3bf483126f028a3.jpg) It says it has 2 channel tube preamp and I'd like to know what preamp means in this context. Is it like a regular amp head? I'm assuming that there is an output jack in the back. Does it have an impendence rate? Basically I just want to know if I plug it into a regular 8ohm cab and have it all work.

ok preamp in context means wait for it "preamp" the clue is in the name...
The signal goes from your guitar into the amp the first part of your amplifier to get a hold of that signal is the preamp this is where your signal gets amplified to a level usable to the power amp which is what gives you the output for your speaker (very over simplified explanation)
2 channel pre-amp means exactly that, there are 2 seperate stages and its switchable between, ie one clean one dirty, I should add also that the gain and EQ are also handled by the preamp.
and yes ofcourse there is an ouput jack at the back,
the output impedance is a minimum of 4 ohms, its a solid state amp so you dont have to match the impedance in the same way as a valve amp. an 8 ohm cab would be fine (I know it does have valves in there but they are just in the preamp section its output is still solid state)
Personally I wouldn't touch it, I looked at the manual online to find the impedance and came across plenty of reviews, which basically say it aint much cop.

I'll rephrase it for him- he doesn't really know anything about amps, and didn't want to elicit the type of incredulous and condescending response you just gave, so he didn't come right out and ask "can someone please give me a full explanation of the workings of a basic amplifier"..
I think someone should give a thorough explanation on a seperate post, and make it a sticky. I'll admit I don't know much about how amps work, so it would sure help me, as it would help many others too.

incredulous and condescending ??
It was a pigeon English question that could have meant several things, there was no obvious question. It could mean at least two things.
Instead of chewing my ass why not answer it yourself

no harm no foul, I come across as being abrubt or sarcastic when I'm not, so I can understand you may have thought I was being rude with my original reply.
But trust me when I am being rude or sarcastic there is no mistaking it

Cool. So do you think you, or Mort, or maybe Chuck could make a post concerning basic layout of an amp? I'd sure benefit from it, because I basically know shi!t about amps. Then get someone to sticky it maybe?

What is it you want to know?
Guitar>preamp(GAIN&EQ)>FX loop/reverb>(M/V)power amp>speaker
thats pretty much the basic nuts and bolts

in a nut shell, pre-amp takes the itty bitty signal from your pickups and adds colour and flavour(EQ and gain stages)..........but its still in a very small, practically inaudiable level signal...........then it goes (sometimes via an fx loop) into the power amp, which makes the little itty bitty signal
VERY LOUD
sometimes both sections have valves, sometimes both have solid state components and sometimes they can be a mixture of the two as in Valvestates and other 'hybrids'
Ones that have valves in both sections can also have a large amount of circuit board based components for switching and external control, and some are just simple 'point to point' wiring with no PCB components at all
