By Darth Scourge

In this lesson im gonna introduce the tools of the trade for shred playing. I'm gonna give some finger exercises that will break those fingers in and give some examples of the techniques that many shred players use. Here is a good finger exercise that involves stretching those fingers and hammering on and pulling off. Try moving up and down frets.
I--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1-3-5--I
I--------------------------------------------------------------------1-3-5---------1-3-5------------I
I-------------------------------------------1-3-5---------1-3-5----------1-3-5----------------------I
I------------------1-3-5---------1-3-5----------1-3-5-----------------------------------------------I
I---------1-3-5----------1-3-5----------------------------------------------------------------------I
I-1-3-5---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I

One technique that is very popular is sweep picking. There are many ways to sweep but for this first lesson I'll introduce some basic three string ideas. Here is the first.

I-15-12--------------12---14-11-------------11--15-12--------------12-----------I
I----------14-----14----------------13-----13---------------14-----14-------15--I
I--------------15-------------------------14-----------------------15-----------I
I-------------------------------------------------------------------------------I
I-------------------------------------------------------------------------------I
I-------------------------------------------------------------------------------I

Heres another

I---------------10-13-10--------------------------10-13-10-------------I
I----------12---------------12-----------------12--------------12------I
I-10-13------------------------13--10--13-----------------------13-10--I
I----------------------------------------------------------------------I
I----------------------------------------------------------------------I
I----------------------------------------------------------------------I

Remember to play these slowly at first and gradually increasing speed over time. One more technique I'm going to show you is a tapping exercise that is widely used by players such as Van Halen and Steve Vai. Here's the first.

I-12-5-----------------------------------------------I
I--------8-12-5--------------------------------------I
I------------------7-12-5----------------------------I
I----------------------------7-12-5------------------I
I--------------------------------------7-12-5---5----I
I---------------------------------------------8------I
   T T T T T
And one more.
I-12-5-8-12-5-8-----------------12-5-8----------12-5-8----------I
I----------------12-5-8-12-5-8----------12-5-8----------12-5-8--I
I---------------------------------------------------------------I
I---------------------------------------------------------------I
I---------------------------------------------------------------I
I---------------------------------------------------------------I
  T T T T T T T T

Thats all for now hope you enjoy.
