Looking For A Small Amp. Any Suggestions?

Posted by Jimmy25 in Electric Guitar

- Hey Guys, I'm looking for a small size amp that I could easily carry around with me mainly between school dorm and my house, or sometimes other places. It's mostly going to be use for practice only, so I'm not going to need a loud volume, but I'm looking for an amp as small as possible, would be great if it's light, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, with decent sound quality, and also include distortion effect. I'm not so sure where does the small size amps range in price, but I can tell you I'm kind of on a limited budget (no worries, just give me the amp name and price, I'll do the math and figure out which one works best for me). I mean, the amp doesn't need to be awesome, it's just for practicing in a small room.

BTW, it's for my Fender 57 Reissue Stratocaster Made In Japan Since 1993.

Style of music I like to play: Blues, Jazz, Funk, Rock
Some examples of the tone I'm looking for would be:

John Mayer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQkO3SGB3So&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWv3cZOBgpM&feature=related
Jimi Hendrix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz85o1paFMQ
Funk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIqEDjabG-g&feature=related
And sometimes I would play rock songs like this too
(so I prefer there's distortion effect along with the amp)

They have a whole new line for 2012. They reintroduced the star guitars. They went back to pointy headstocks. They went back to a single humbucker (on some models). If the necks are as nice as I would expect them to be you can be sure I will be getting one.

Throw in a hot pickup and send it out for paint.

Hell yeah !!

$499.00

Sanded Maple Neck (Before And After)

Posted by Jimmy25 in Electric Guitar

- Finally, I've decided to sand down my Fender 57 Reissue Stratocaster Made In Japan Since 1993's Poly Vintage Maple Neck. Basically, what I did: I used both sandpaper 1000 & 2000 grit, then wipe down the neck with a cotton rag with hand soap, sand a bit more at the area that still felt sticky to me, then lastly a microfiber cloth with a damp of water and wipe it down completely clean.

I must say, the result turned out great ! Just like what I wanted, a smooth neck. I hesitated a lot before I made this move, but now I have absolute no regret in doing this, since it's probably a guitar I'm not planning on selling in the future, and with a guitar, playability is always more important than appearance, it's not a museum guitar, it's a guitar you want to be able to pick up and play for a long time comfortably. Besides, I think the change in look is not even that noticeable unless you look at it extremely close, even from close view, the real difference I can see is the gloss is gone. What do you guys think? judging from the pics below, is the change in look obvious?

QUESTION
1) Right now my only concern is, I've heard sanded maple neck gets dirty and turns gray very easily. What's a good solution to avoid that from happening? I want it to age well and turn yellowish not gray. I see people tend to use Car Polish or Tung Oil to give it a protection after sanding? should I use one of these as well? But isn't that just going to make the neck sticky again?
2) Is it right that eventually it's going to become glossy and sticky again and I'll have to sand it down again? But usually how long does the sanded smoothness last?
3) The first picture of AFTER, there's a scratch, but I think it was there long before I sanded the neck, it's not from sanding, just wondering, is there any way I could remove that scratch?

I'm thinking it would be a great amp paired with my Epiphone hollowbody, for blues, rock, jazz. They don't stock it in any area stores here and I would have to order it if I wanted to get one.

- I am window shopping for a small size flamenco sounding guitar. Someone suggested the AHQ-10. From what I see from this link:

http://www.antoniohermosa.com/ahq10.html

it looks like a pretty decent guitar, not great but, decent.

In spite of this link I still have some questions. One being: what does it sound like? I can't find a sound clip for it.

Does anyone on this forum know anything about this guitar or the company that makes it?

Any in-put will be appreciated.

sandpaper /scotch-brite / scrub-buds for sticky maple neck?

Posted by Jimmy25 in Electric Guitar

- ok as other suggested, forget about lemon oil / powder,
now which one should I use,
I was able to dig out these three stuffs from my house:

for sticky vintage maple poly finish neck:
sandapaper (made in japan) or
3M scotch-brite (made in korea) or
scrub buds (made in korea) ?

going for a permanent solution.

after applying any of those,
is there any other process that follows after this step?
and is the maple neck going to look much different?
or hardly recognizable?

Sticky Neck: I'll Use Lemon Oil And Powder Instead Of Sandpaper. What Do You Think?

Posted by Jimmy25 in Electric Guitar

- For Experimenting: I just tried 1000 grit sandpaper on my old cheap no brand guitar neck for the first time, and as you can see, left part is already sanded a little; right part is not sanded yet. It does feel more smooth and comfortable, and I would sand down the whole neck for this old cheap guitar.

BUT, after trying sanding on my old cheap guitar, for some reason now I don't really want to do it with my "Fender 57 Reissue Stratocaster Made In Japan Since 1993's Poly Maple Neck" anymore, partly because I don't want to lose to the original. Of course playability is more important, but personally, I just don't find sanding making "A HUGE" difference in terms of smoothness. A lot of you would probably disagree with me on this, but it's just my personal preference after trying it out myself...

SO, I thought might as well stick with the gentle way for solving sticky maple neck issues which is using these I got beside me: (I understand for smoothness these can't be as effective as sandpaper but at least they should help? I mean, with my maple neck, a little more smooth than how it is now, then I'm satisfied.)

QUESTION:
1) If I rub my maple neck with a rag with this lemon oil and let it dry, then do it again, is it going to be: the more times I repeat this step the more smooth it will get? or with lemon oil + rag no matter how much I do it, it's just going to be the same amount of stickiness that I lose?
2) If I use this powder often, is the neck going to be less and less sticky over time, or no matter how long, when the powder is gone, the same amount of stickiness is back?
3) Anyone have any review on this lemon oil / powder brand? are they safe for poly maple neck?

any reply will be highly appreciated thank you

HELP ME PLEASE I'M AN IDIOT :)

Posted by qdqswi in Effects Pedals

- Hey. I'm quite new to pedals in general. I've always been a multi-fx person.. kind of person out of versatility and cost, till I purchased a PRS us custom 24 and decided... "If my guitar is this good.. I definitely need a proper rig to compliment it"

So far I have these pedals;

Boss TU3, Ibanez ts808, DR TONE Delay (good pedal, relatively unknown though), Electro Harmonix LPB1 and an Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus.

I'm a massive fan of David Gilmour.. And I'm aware he that used an overdrive pedal as well as an Electro Harmonix Big Muff.

So my question is... Should I keep my rig how it is.. Or should I purchase a Big Muff? If so... Which model? If I used a muff + ts would there be any point in the Electro Harmonix booster I bought?

Also.. Is it TS into Muff or Muff into TS?

I have a line 6 amp at home. I spend most of my time though going through Valve Blackstar amps at university on a clean channel. I don't really care what I sound like at home so long as I sound good when it comes to actual giggin. I'm also going to buy a compressor at some point (probably a boss cs-3, or black finger). Right now though I'm focusing on building my lead tone. so... I'd really appreciate any advice you could give or even better alternatives to the Big Muff.. Any tips on effect settings using the ones I own to achieve a Gilmour-esque tone would be highly kind of you all.

Posted by bbb2487 in Ask The Pros

- Hi Guys/girls,

Have been offered this by a friend but I'm not sure if he's ripping me off, maybe someone could advise?

Gibson Sg Standard - Heritage Cherry

Instantly recognizable. The backbone of rock and roll. The ultimate conduit between the music in your head and the sound coming out of your amp. Gibson’s best-selling SG Standard shatters all perceptions of what an electric guitar can — and should — be.

The slim, lightweight mahogany body; unmistakable twin cutaways, pointed horns and beveled edges; the fastest neck in the business; a pair of Gibson’s screamin’ humbucker pickups — all irresistible features coveted by some of the greatest guitar players of all-time.

Body - Mahogany
Neck / Profile - Mahogany / rounded
Fingerboard / Inlay - Rosewood / Trapezoid
Scale / Nut Width - 24 3/4" / 1 11/16"
Bridge / Tailpiece - Tune-o-matic / Stop bar
Hardware - Chrome
Pickups - 490R Alnico magnet humbucker / 498T Alnico magnet humbucker
Controls - Two volume, two tone, three-way switch

I appreciate any help in advance

Thanks

- Hi,

When I play some notes on my higher strings, then my other strings (mainly the low E) picks up the harmonic vibrations, and starts humming. Louder and louder, until I mute it. I tried palm muting only that string while playing the higher strings, without touching the rest, but I find it rather difficult. Is this the way to do it or are there other, better, easier techniques?

UK adapter for Guyatone Vintage Tremolo

Posted by DropOutVenus in Effects Pedals

- Hi there. I have here a Vintage Tremolo, with the American adapter. I bought a universal adapter from Maplin as I'm in the UK, but although the tremolo is the sweetest I've ever heard, I can't get rid of this constant hum, to the point where I don't really use it, which is a real shame. Does anyone have any pointers on what I should do? It needs an AC-12 AC Adapter.

Much obliged, really.

POD HD Patch v 2.0 to be available soon

- Free update to v 2.0 to be available very soon. Check the Line 6 web site for further details. It deals mostly with the Variax stuff, but does fix some issues with effects and adds some missing controls on some effects.

This continues to show their commitment to support this unit.

Osborne Titan

- Hi, I'm new here. I just aquired a big amp and can't find much info on it.
So far it's history is very interesting. THe company was started by a female Jazz Guitarist Mary Osborne in Bakersfield, CA around the 70's.
They made guitars, amps and PA systems, Mine is model Titan G150TR,
150 watt solid state? Big, they made a rare smaller model called the Stinger which is rare, found a picture of it with an article about Mary Osborne and it is in the same layout as mine. I can't find anything on it
even on vintage amp sites but it's a nice amp in great condition and it sounds as good as it looks.

Elixir strings revisited

Posted by Knucklehead in Acoustic Guitar

- This must be about the 100th post here about coated strings, but it's my first one, so bear with me.

After reading numerous opinions (mostly here) about how they work on electric guitars (or maybe acoustics too, I forget), and then talking to a friend of mine about them, I decided to try a set on my Guild and find out for myself whether or not they're worth the extra money. My friend isn't the most advanced player in the world, but he's a really smart guy and his opinions usually have some merit, and he likes them.

Anyway, I just grabbed a set at the local music store and didn't look too closely at them, or think too much about it, until I went to put them on tonight. Upon closer examination, it appears that only the wound strings are coated. Is this correct? The plain E and B just said they were steel. It would then seem that if the coating really works, the plain strings would go dead long before the wound ones. Is that what happens, and if so, what do you do about it?

I guess I'll find out for myself soon enough, but was wondering if any of the more experienced folks around here had found this to be an issue, and if so, how they dealt with it. By the way, straight out of the box, they seem to sound just fine. Thanks in advance.

Mainly from beginners standpoint?
