A travelers tale

Posted by NoNo in Electric Guitar

- Hi Guys,

I’m collecting a new guitar and amp on my way home from work. I work in North Africa and fly home via London where I will pick up my guitar and amp. I plan on buying a good quality soft bag for my guitar (Gretsh pro jet). I won’t be travelling around with the guitar once I’ve arrived home, and don't have room for a hard case. Is it ok to take this on as hand luggage on an international flight?
The real problem is the Amp!!
I’m buying a Roland cube 80. Dimensions (WxDxH): 440mm X 275mm X 440mm.
I’m thinking of checking it in, as it will be boxed. Now, how do I get it from the guitar shop to the airport? Do you get amp carrying bags? If not I’m thinking of removing it from it’s box in the guitar store, and going round sports stores looking for a sports bag that the box will fit into.

Any other ideas?

- Hey,

Wondering if anyone has tried this pedal. Is it a real two channel od, so you can turn on either switch independently. Not like the fulldrive where one is just a boost for when the other is on.

Volume and tone Pots

Posted by dalefty75 in Ask The Pros

- Couple of months ago I purchased a complete set of Noiseless pickups with Pots NIB on Ebay for my 91 MIM strat. Not till recently that I decided to start the change over and discovered that there are 2 250K pots for tone control and 1 500K pot for the volume control. The original hardware in the guitar has 3 250K pots for all controls and so does the listing in the parts fender parts listing Online.
Was there a mistake in the shipping department or is the 500K the recommended pot for the volume control?

- Hey, I am going to attemp a build at an 8-string semi-hollow guitar and
I was wondering if the EMG BQS bass guitar tone controll system would work nicely in an 8-string guitar. If anyone has any info on this please reply to this thread.
            Thanks,

Splitting and Series Humbuckers

Posted by srinivassa in Pickups

- You know, I really like my Schecter however it's wired. It is almost a perfect guitar for me. But now I'm curious. I thought the wiring diagram for my C1 Classic was extremely unusual, and I really loved the sound of the series coils and the five position switch.

Schecter C1 Classic Wiring Diagram

Now, I'm not so sure that this makes any sense. The split coils at 2 and 4 I like, but the series coils are a lot more meaningful to me. I guess that is the default for humbuckers though? I always thought they had to be in parallel to 'buck hum.' But maybe that means the coils have to be physically in parallel, not electrically.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the wiring diagram. It's probably not to unusual except maybe position 3. 1 and 5 are default for a humbucker? 2 and 4 are not unusal for a single coil config. 3 I have seen in a 4 position tele, but seems more unusual.

I'm wondering if there is anything unusual with this diagram really? I am also wondering if humbuckers run in series electrically all the time?

guitar hardware help

Posted by adamcbest in Electric Guitar

- i posted this on jemsite, btu haven't heard back so i'm posting here as well..

i've been using an RG570 neck in my construction of an electric harp guitar, but i need some helping getting new hardware to match the dimensions of the RG570 neck.. i'm going for a fixed bridge in place of the original Lo-pro (sold that a while ago) Will this bridge match up to all the string spacing and such for the 570 neck. I do have to drill piezo wire holes and install graphtech piezo saddles still but that shouldn't be a problem.

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_bridges/Gotoh_Hardtail_Bridge.html?tab=Pictures#details

for the harp strings i'm using novax individual bridges modified to accept graphtech ghosts saddles, although i'm not sure what style graphtech saddle i need to get for either the gotoh or the novax.. If anyone knows which saddles fit correctly of the top of your head please let me know. We are finishing the body construction faster than i had anticipated, so we'll be ready to install hardware pretty soon.

Oh and does anyone know where i can get custom length strings? The harp strings will be fairly long scale and i don't know any where to buy extra long guitar strings. I'm anticipating having to play with individual nuts to shorten the scale of each string as needed. It's going to be tuned standard EADGBE for the guitar side and for now, E F# G A B C D for the 7 harp strings. might change. Not sure.

Thanks again guys. I appreciate the help.. I'll post some pics once all done. Hopefully it all works out. This is very experimental for us, so we'll see.

My profile shows my tastes but pink floyd, nirvana and green day would be the top 3. What I want to know is if it easy to swap out the standard pickups for an SD 59 and classics or what would anyone reccomend for these type of sounds? Also do pots need changing from standard and is that easy to do?

When i put my hand on the strings the noise get off, i have tried to get distance from the amp but the noise don't wnat to stop. Whne i connect ather guitars on this amp no noise out of it, so it means that the guitar has this noise. What can i do? Does any of you have experiences with this kind of problem?
Pickups and New Guitar

Posted by stretch05 in Electric Guitar

- Hey, I'm new to the forum and relatively new to guitar (one year). I picked up a squier strat and learned to play on that. It has served me well, but now it's time to upgrade. I've been looking around and I'm thinking I might go for a ESP Eclipse II. From what I've read its a great guitar for the money. Of course, I'll have to be the judge of that.

My question regards the pickups. I am trying to really understand active and passive pickups. The Eclipse has Active EMG's that are supposed to be pretty awesome. I read that they are generally better for playing with gain, which I don't do too much of now due to my weak little amp, which I will be soon upgrading. I'm looking for recommendations about this guitar and the pickups and the playing style. I don't play metal, I like a lot of classic rock. David Gilmour has to be my favorite. Other music I play isn't as "heavy" as most metallica or other metal. What other guitars should I be looking at. I am trying to stay under a grand for the guitar.

Also, I figure I will upgrade my pickups in my squier strat. It's got sentimental value as my first guitar so I won't be getting rid of it. Should I just put some passive pickups in that and get a guitar with EMG's? I think that is the way I will go.

I though it was the pedal chain, but I bypassed each each of the pedals and swapped patch chords (not systematically, just enough to realize the problem did not go away)

Posted by bigdaddy76 in Electric Guitar

- Went to see Brad Paisley last nt. Great show! He is a well known Tele swinger, and the 1st time I saw him, he used exclusively Teles. Last nt. however, he used a strat and a hollowbody for a song . (I beleive to be a Gretsch.) What really surprised me though was the Les Paul/ Tele combo he used for the last song of the nt. (yes, this is the one he fell down and busted his arse on.) The video is on youtube. This particular guitar had a LP body shape with Tele controls. It was quite sharp looking. Does anyone have any info on this guitar? I could not tell if it was a Gibby or a Fender by the headstock. I am completlely smitten with this guitar, and must find out if this model is available to buy. LOL

- More details to follow............

Nah I'm only kidding, I don't do that teasing BS

I am now the owner of a genuine "Pete Cornish P2" Effects pedal

I bought it on evil-bay, had the nerve to bid blind with 2 seconds to go knowing what I was willing to pay and if I didn't get it then so be.

It's getting posted tomorrow with a 24 hour delivery company so with all things considered I should be able to post pictures Wednesday.

I am very interested to get my hands on it, part of me wants to take it apart just to see how it works. But its ALLOT!! of money to throw away, part of me wants to just hear one myself to know what the fuss is about and if the quality of the sound is partly mojo induced as its an exclusive pedal to own. And another part of me may just box it up and store it for a good few years till Pete pops his clogs and then I have an instant profit as the price will hit the roof, or I may do what mort did when he had one a while back, play with it for a month enjoy it and then sell it on. Either way I am pretty stoked right now.... I am thinking mothballing it will probably be my choice, it beats keeping money in the bank right now. Besides it can keep my as new still boxed never been stood on "Boss DM-2" company, that thing was made in 1982, Its already worth allot more than I paid for it now

Mesa Boogie Messin With My Head!

Posted by biggo66 in Amplifiers

- I have an old Mesa Boogie Mk II combo. I've had it for about 30 years now. In her day, she was a beauty amp.

For some time now, it has had some kind of problem with it that causes it to make popping noises and, on occasion, lots of crackling noises. It has been sitting in my noise room corner for years because of this.

So recently I was given the name of a highly recommended amp tech in my area. After weeks of calling I finally got in touch with him and I have arranged to take the amp to him next week.

So after I hung up the phone I pulled the amp out of the corner and plugged it in to review the problem. Wouldn't you know... it is playing perfectly... no problem at all... it's gone!

I have since played about four hours on the thing for about an hour at a time... not so much as a whisper! The damned thing is playing like new! It sounds great!

Am I losing my mind? Have I had a perfectly good Mesa Boogie sitting in my corner for years? Was I dreaming when I heard all that noise and nonsense all those years ago?

It seems quite odd to be complaining about having a 30-year-old Mesa Boogie combo that plays like new, but this thing is messin' with my head!

- Here is the fifth lesson on “Buleria” (playing- jokingly) for beginners based on the Paco De Lucia’s techniques and style, with this video you can learn all what you need to play this 12 beat structure that is very prominent in the gypsy traditional music, and certainly very interesting rhythm, for it is considered the main and most important style in flamenco music.

The Buleria rhythm is in 12

                   and has the following accents,
                     on 3,6,8,10,and 12.

(can also be accented on 3,7,8,10,and 12.)

Reverb pedal but for a different purpose....................

Posted by Maritimer in Effects Pedals

- .............because it seems I don't do anything normal as of late!

My Peavey KB4 amp has no on-board reverb, so I'd like to get a decent reverb pedal, but I only need to use it on the #3 (vocal) channel. I use my GT8 for my electric and acoustic when going through my amp, and I have reverb already in my patches. When we use #3 channel for vocals, having them dry doesn't cut it (as you all already know that has listened to anything I have sung!) and I need all the help I can get. I have an FX loop for my #3 channel alone, so it should work fine. Just thought I'd ask for a few suggestions on reverb pedals that might be a good fit for vocals and not break the bank.

OD pedal for non-pedal steel?

Posted by Stringmaster in Effects Pedals

- I've done a lot of reading but have found that most reviews of OD pedals are mostly about a lot of distortion. I have a sweet 54/55 Bassman clone that sounds great if I push it just a bit above acceptable practice volume, and I'm looking for a way to get that sound at a lower volume. I play a 56 Fender Stringmaster, which has two single coil pickups.

Any suggestions for pedals to look at? From what I've heard so far both the OCD and the Zendrive may be possibilities if I keep them towards the clean end.

Acoustic Recording Kit

Posted by Cheesefish in Acoustic Guitar

- Hi all,

I have a Simon & Patrick WD SP6 Spruce, which I love, been playing a few years now, slowing improving. By the way its a straight acoustic - no electrics.

Basically I want to record myself using the PC (or a MAC). I know the quality will be poor but the point is for me to hear myself and work out what works and what doesn't.

So I'm gonna need a Mic and software I guess. I know there are reviews and links in the software section but wanted to know if people had strong opinions on any of them. I briefly tried an old version of Magix - seemed ok. Never had a Mic.

There may be a better place / forum for this but I wanted the opinions of the acoustic players rather than a load of electro evangelising!

thoughts appreciated
