Pushing string into the body

Posted by sunnyboy

- In many places here it has been suggested that for great tone one should strive pressing the string toward the guitar body.
Now I tried and tried but it is physically impossible to me.
If it is free stroke then it just naturally goes 'from' the body not 'into' it.
If it is rest stroke then it naturally goes 'into' guitar.

I'm confused. When someone speaks of 'one should be pushing the string 'into' the body...' do they really talk about the rest strokes?

Please someone of pro players here explain it to me and others

Speed Limitations for Older Beginners

Posted by sunnyboy

- I will never run a four minute mile. In fact, these days, I couldn't even run for a bus! I am wondering if, for the same reason - caused by one's physical aging and the consequent limitations - it is not really possible to still play the faster pieces even with time and hard work. Am I being defeatist or should I be still striving to play any piece that requires speed and stamina, and play them as well as a twenty year old. I would prefer to avoid the hyperbolic answers that are usually used by a certain direct selling organisation who try to convince their cult members that "you can do absolutely anything you want to if you just try". :x One must set realistic, attainable goals.

Hermosa AHQ-10 Does Anyone Know About It?

Posted by Lafayette

- I am window shopping for a small size flamenco sounding guitar. Someone suggested the Hermosa AHQ-10. From what I see from this link:

http://www.antoniohermosa.com/ahq10.html

it looks like a pretty decent guitar, not great but, decent.

In spite of this link I still have some questions. One being: what does it sound like? I can't find a sound clip for it.

Does anyone on this forum know anything about this guitar or the company that makes it?

Any in-put will be appreciated.

Chopin on guitar?!

Posted by mgorelli49@yahoo.com

- ...anyone else had a go at this? I suppose the purist would argue against it, as Chopin's nocturnes were written exclusively for piano. But if a guitarist like the composition, should that stop him from trying to learn it? Probably. Here's my attempt at his Nocturne No. 2 on the guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB6kfiDGe4k

Criticisms and insults rather than kind words would be appreciated, so if you have any of these to offer, thanks in advance.

- Hi there!

How to play fast with no hassle. I do not believe in a 3 hours warm-up to be able to play. Neither in a 10 hours daily practice.
You have many things to do to enjoy your life, why staying in your bedroom practicing the guitar for hours and hours when, what you want, is to play music.
Technique is just a tool and here is another one to help you playing fast (do not listen the ones who tell “everybody has limits”.

Yamaha CG-170CA Bridge Question

Posted by RMMM

- New to GNet..

I just got this guitar as a gift.
Sat unused for 10 years and is in perfect shape.

I was changing the strings....and the white plastic bridge piece that fits in a slot on the bridge (elevates the strings ) dropped out on the carpet.

Now I don't know which way it goes in.

One end is to be higher that the other.
Means the slot is level but the white plastic piece is of increasing height from one end to the other.

Which end goes on treble E and which goes on bass E ??

Please advise how it is supposed to look, so I know that it is correct.

Thanks

Posted by RacerXxx

- I can't figure out what guitar this is.. the headstock looks like a cross between Martin and Fender, the guitar sounds incredible... anyone know !?
my buddy thinks it's a Takamine...

Great balance of bass and trble... no booming low strings just really well made and setup.

Oh and the player is amazing, he takes popular classics and reinterprets them in a Classical style.. he plays the guitar line, percussion, vocal line and solos at the same time...sometimes sings also.

what can I do !?!? I can considering taking out the plastic bridge piece that the strings rest on and sanding it down a few mm's on the bottom..is this a good idea? has anyone done this before !?

Playing with Arthritis

Posted by Maghdalena

- Does anyone here play with arthritis? I have it in both hands and in my right elbow and shoulder. I want to learn classical guitar. I can play and so far I don’t have issues practicing, but then I’m just getting started and I play fairly slow. But my question is what are your biggest issues and problems in playing with arthritis, what solutions or remedies work for you and why? What can you recommend? This also goes for other Repetitive Stress Injuries. Tell the rest of us because a lot of us are learning classical guitar later in life. Is 50 too old to learn classical?
Any help would be appreciated

There are several opportunities to see some of these great performers like Russell in Scotland and Angel Romero in Alaska, and possibly other such types of guitar trips. Any thoughts on your past experiences?

I've heard those terms before, but never really knew what they meant until I played this guitar. Can't find anything on web about the maker. It's a substantial investment of about $7,000 so would like to know more about the makers reputation.

Posted by GeorgeMacLeod

- I have a Rozas 660mm and am considering buying another instrument with same scale length. The dealer I've been using is sold on the longer scale length. Says it's acoustically superior. He says most guitars are built with 650mm scales because Japenese market demands it. Anybody opinions appreciated before I make this commitment. What do the superstars like Williams use?

Favorite nylon-string/classical songs/pieces to play

Posted by joelspencer

- Since this forum is so dead anymore, I'd like to see this forum expanded to make it all-inclusive to the nylon-string guitar, not just classical playing. Even though I'm not a "classical guitarist," per se, I really love the sound of a nylon-string guitar and thought I would make a post to see if others enjoy playing the nylon-string as well, classical guitar or otherwise.

This is the time of year that I regret that I don't play my nylon-string more throughout the year. Since I don't have a whole lot of free time anymore, I don't get to play any of my guitars as much as I used to and, when I do finally get to play, I usually end up playing my Taylor 6-string almost exclusively. However, usually sometime in November, I start playing the nylon-string regularly to play the Christmas carols. I think so many of the carols (especially the traditional ones) sound so much better on a nylon-string, so I've been playing my nylon-string quite a bit in recent weeks.

Anyway, I'll start off with just a few of the nylon-string pieces/songs I enjoy playing and will hope to add some more later...here we go:

1) "Romanza" ... I still think this could be the ultimate guitar song right here. It's just such a beautiful piece of music...my wife, who really doesn't know a whole lot about music and usually starts making death threats towards me when I pull out one of my guitars to play, really loves it when I play this piece for her, so this piece has to be great to get that kind of reaction from her. I got a tip here several years ago from Dave/solsbury_hill to play this piece along with a beautiful Sor piece called "Etude in E minor," which is one of the greatest tips I've ever gotten and something I still do to this very day. But "Romanza" just does it for me...I just love playing the piece and love listening to it as well.

2) Sor's "Study in B Minor" ... I got this from a tablature book I bought about 7 or 8 years ago. I didn't play it for a long time, but then one day realized that I had a version of this piece by Andres Segovia and decided to learn it. I just love Segovia's interpretation of this piece...the hesitation and the soft way he plays it just works perfectly, IMO. I also think this is one of those pieces that just sounds so great on the nylon-string...I wonder if Sor had to do it over again, he would have given this piece a different name, because I don't think the name "Study in B Minor" really gives the piece its due. What a beautiful piece of music this is.

3) "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams...I know this isn't technically a classical piece, per se, but I still think this is such a great piece of music and something I really enjoy playing as well. It's just such a memorable piece...I've heard Tommy Emmanuel's version of this song and, although I think Tommy Emmanuel is one of the great guitarists today, I think the original version by Williams will always be the best. Mason Williams was also a comedy writer in addition to being a guitarist, but he really created one of the all-time great music pieces here...just a wonderful piece of music, IMO.

I'll stop here for now and hope to add a few more later. In the meantime, what are some of your favorite nylon-string/classical pieces to play?

PS: Eugene, do you still post here anymore? I haven't seen you post here in ages...if you still do post here, I just wanted to say "hello" to you and hope you are doing well!

Posted by bhealey

- Hands are the most essential part of playing the guitar. Then let us all STOP exercisng them with store bought or anything that you have to squeeze. Instead, get a heavy rubber band, put inaround your fingers near your nails on open slowly, hold, close slowly, 10x each hand. Build up to 30 reps a day. You are now building up muscle that nobody ever works on, IT WORKS, and it's free !!!!

Classical guitar pickups and restaurant gigs

- I am looking to use a pickup on my classical without physically modifying my guitar in any way. I am looking to amplify the sound of my Esteve classical at an upcoming restaurant gig. Any recommendations or insights into what other players are using in terms of their sound set-up would be very highly appreciated!
Thanks!

Any suggestions on a classical guitar around $1000?

- I've played for many years and own several guitars both acoustic and electric. I am looking to spend around $1000 to purchase a new classical guitar. I have found a couple of models with solid spruce or solid cedar tops, with solid rosewood sides and backs in that range from Manuel Rodriguez and Antonio Aparicio that seem pretty nice. Does anyone have any sugestions? Thanks
